SEDIMENTARY ROCK GALLERY

The Outlier by Simon Pope The Rotunda Museum, Vernon Road, Scarborough, North Yorkshire 19th July - 28th September 2014 10am-5pm There is a rock on the corner of Royal Terrace in Scarborough – a glacial erratic – which eludes the town's geological collection. While others sit in collective isolation in the cabinets of the Rotunda Museum and its stores, artist Simon Pope suggests it 'remains maverick – warily, we might imagine – perhaps in expectation of its inevitable capture.' In The Outlier, Pope and other participants imagine how the erratic and related objects understand their relationships to each other – as a way of understanding their 'social world’. These four short documentary films by Tariq Emam provide an insight into Simon Pope's artistic practice and the making of this work. Commissioned by Scarborough Museums Trust for Dictionary of Stone, curated by Lara Goodband Supported by Arts Council England tinyurl.com/theoutlier rotundamuseum.co.uk scarboroughmuseumstrust.org.uk

Glacial Erratic. An intersection of art and geology - how a glacial erratic that sits outside its relatives safely caged in a comfortable museum, focuses attention on the social lives of the townsfolk.
